Lessons

LESSONS

Styles

With Kevin’s support you can learn a variety of styles that he is able to teach :
rock, pop, blues, country, funk, fusion, jazz, soul, reggae, ska, latin, folk, bluegrass, klesma.

Levels

Music levels will be taught to suit the individual:
Bass guitar – beginners / intermediate / advanced
Electric or acoustic guitar – beginners / intermediate

Exams

Working towards a national music exam encourages the development of musical skills, knowledge and understanding, providing the foundation musical qualifications and a love of music. Kevin can help students progress towards all exam levels up to Grade 8 on either bass or guitar. In this way, a number of his students have gained access to higher education courses and progressed onto subsequent musical careers.

Are you a beginner?

Starting to play is the most difficult challenge to overcome, fraught with challenges that cause many to waste their time and give up within weeks. This can be avoided with Kevin’s lessons as they will give you personalised, professional guidance right from the start. With time, practice and Kevin’s tailored support you can set off on your musical journey confident you have full understanding and the appropriate techniques. Having a personalised teacher will enable you to develop an excellent understanding of harmony, rhythm, melody and essential theory.

Kevin says –

“I enjoy the challenges that my students bring to the lessons. Some may have a good technique but a very poor understanding of rhythm and theory, or poor technique with a good sense of rhythm. It is my job as a tutor to ‘fill the gaps’ in their knowledge and skills whilst at the same time building on their strengths and interests. For example, I can help those students with no sense of rhythm to actually ‘play in time’; rhythm isn’t magic – it’s counting!”

Intermediate / Advanced players

Kevin’s vast wealth of experience of many music formats makes him ideally placed to aid musicians who are already established. He has a unique ability to and analyse a player’s techniques, strengths and weaknesses. This enables musicians to further develop their skills and perform at more advanced levels. So whether it is a particular piece that needs to be learned, an audition that needs preparation or a general improvement in skill required, the experienced player will always benefit from time spent in Kevin’s studio.

I’ve been having guitar lessons with Kevin for almost 7 years now. I started as a complete novice, no experience, and no concept of how to play correctly.

I had been playing guitar all my life as an enjoyable hobby then retirement gave me the chance to play more than work had allowed. I thought I knew a lot about playing but then I was presented with a set of lessons with Kevin to help me play electric guitar.

I have been taking bass tuition with Kev for about 5 years.   Although I had been playing acoustic guitar for 20+ years, I had no idea about theory, or the neck, or even what I was playing most of the time because I was one of those 'self taught' capo wielding musicians playing combinations of A, E, D  and G.

During my one to one sessions with Kevin over many years we have covered so much ground, which has greatly improved my playing and overall approach to becoming a better musician.

What can you say about Kevin Francis? The bass players’ bass player. A rock a nore rock legend! Soul, rock, R&B, standards. He has it all covered. What makes him special is that as well as being a band leader, and a gigging musician he combines this with teaching bass and guitar.

Kevin took me from a complete novice to earning a BMUS with honors and this is completely down to his unbelievable teaching. I'd imagine the next level would be to become Hendrix...

Peter Bolwell says...

It is natural for students to look for a good player when they want to learn, and Kevin is certainly that. Although he prefers not to be part of a regular band these days, it seems whenever a band is short of a bass player locally, Kevin is the one they call on to fill in.

Kevin is a teacher in the true sense of the word. He tutored and mentored my son Max through his bass grades, to eventually a Grade 8 Distinction and then onto studying music at Salford University.
